The Student Experience in 2020

Change is inevitable over the next ten years.  Predicting the future is complex but we all need to take some time to try and look ahead so that we can inform our strategic decisions.  The changing ways in which our students will work will have implications for the physical resources we will need to devote to them.  Our own employment patterns will change as we respond to new communications opportunities as well as post carbon business models.

This seminar is being sponsored by the College and University Business Officers to address these challenges.  It will be of interest to both directors and senior managers within the hospitality and business services of higher education institutions.

The keynote speaker during the morning will be Dr James Bellini, a leading futurologist and author with a considerable reputation as a thought provoking speaker at top level management conferences and business schools around the world.  James has spent more than twenty five years as a respected TV broadcaster, futures analyst and writer, with a strong focus on social, economic and technological trends up to 2025. After lunch the seminar will hear from Professor Steve Smith, current President of Universities UK and Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Exeter. This will be followed by a seminar style panel discussion on the challenges of the future.

Dr James Bellini

The challenges facing higher education over the next ten years:

● the demographic time bomb in western Europe and its effect on admissions
● how connectivity and networks will impact on our work as employers and
employees and upon the way we communicate with our clients
● adapting an essentially 19th century university infrastructure, large lecture
theatres, seminar rooms, offices for staff, to deliver 21st century teaching
   and research
● the effect of public sector cuts on higher education
● the importance of shared services to enable organisations to achieve their
   strategic aims.
